Effect on the CCI©þ-induced Rat Liver Damage of the Baekso-Hwan and Kamibaekso-Hwan

Abstract
According to Oriental clinical effect findings hitherto, Baekso-Hwan was presented that it had been-curative effects on hepatic diseases. In present report antihepatotoxic effect of Baekso-Hwan and combination of several herbs in it, Kamibaekso-Hwan, and each herb consisting of his prescription were proved by the following test :antagonizing a liver defect which was caused by carbon tetrachloride (CC14) and can be demonstrated by inhibitory activity and regulation of hepatic metabolizing enzymes and components in rat serum after administration of the ab¢¥ve prescription. Because of the comparable histological pictures of liver damage by CCI4 and of human diffuse hepatitis, further work was done on liver damage by CCI4. The results summarized as follows : 1. Measured on the largely hepatospecific serum enzyme activities glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase(GOT), glutamic pyruvate transaminase(CPT), alkaline phospliatase(AlP), lactic dehydrogenase(LDI-), leucineaminopeptidase(LAP), and total cholesterol(T. Ch.), total protein(TP) and prothrombin time(PT), Baekso-Hwan liquid extract possesses pronounced curative effect against damage of the rat liver induced by CO. 2. Pharbitis Semen, which is one of the components of this prescription showed the most effect and Cyperi Rhizoma and Pteropi Stercus also found the almost some effects in this test. 3. As compare with both Baekso-Hwan and Kamibaekso-Hwan, the latter was more effective and its action seemed to depend highly on that induced by synergism.
4. Combination of Artermisiae Capillaris Herba and Amydae Carpax in Baekso-Hwan, repectively also was indicated almost equil activity, and in case of adding Lacca Rhois, and Scirpi Tuber, Zedoariae Rhizoma were not effective markedly to compare it, and showed a weak curative action. 5. Amydae Carapax which is present in this al5ove prescription markedly decreased various serum enzymes and components. It may be expected to show antihepatotoxic activities, and others. Showed a weak effect in comparison with it. 6. According to the above mentioned results the Baekso-Hwan and Kamibaekso-Hwan have been take a favorable turn the nature of a disorder of serum active en-. zymes.
Therefore those two kinds of prescription which were applied for the liver diseases presumed to be have curative effects.
